NASA Internship Program 2024/2025: NASA internships and fellowships leverage NASA’s unique missions and programs to enhance and increase the capability, diversity and size of the nation’s future science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce.

Internships are available from high school to graduate level. Internships provide students with the opportunity to participate in either research or other experiential learning, under the guidance of a mentor at NASA.

Eligibility & Requirements to Apply for NASA Internship Program.

What are the eligibility requirements?

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Full-time students (high school through graduate)
  • 16 years of age at the time of application (no exceptions)
  • Undergraduate and graduate students must be enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university.
  • Educators are also eligible to apply

Can international students apply?

All applicants must be U.S. citizens in order to apply for an internship. More information about opportunities for international students can be found at www.nasa.gov/stem/international-internships-for-students.html

What is the minimum age for applicants completing an application?

Applicants must be 16 years old at the time they submit the application. Unfortunately, there are no exceptions at this time.

I have completed my undergraduate degree and am transitioning to graduate school. Am I eligible during this gap period?

If you have completed your undergraduate degree and are enrolled in graduate school the following semester, you are eligible for an internship during the gap period.

BELOW ARE THE TOP FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NASA INTERNSHIPS;

  • NASA INTERNS CONTRIBUTE TO NASA MISSIONS!
    Interns are integrated in NASA teams and assigned to authentic projects.
  • PRIOR EXPERIENCE IS NOT REQUIRED!
    Although prior experience can be valuable and may be preferred for some projects, it is not a requirement for NASA internships.
  • MOST INTERNS RECEIVE A STIPEND AWARD!
    The stipend award amount is based on student’s academic level and the length of internship.
  • NASA INTERN PROJECTS ARE AVAILABLE IN THREE SESSIONS.
    Interns are selected and placed in projects for fall, spring and summer sessions at any NASA location.
  • ONE APPLICATION CAN BE VIEWED AGENCYWIDE.
    Students complete one application that is viewed by mentors agencywide.

When will I hear if I am selected?

Selections may occur any time after you submit your application.. You will be contacted if you are considered for a project.

Are selections made for every project?

Selections are contingent upon many factors, so some projects may remain unfilled.

What kind of projects are available?

Projects vary at every center each session. Once you complete an application, you will be able to view the available projects for the specified session. You can use filters to locate specific projects that meet your desired geographic location and skill sets.

Do I have to apply to a project?

You do not have to apply to a specific project; however, doing so increases your chances of the mentor reviewing your application.

Are the internships paid?

The majority of interns received a stipend award, but there are some volunteer opportunities noted in project descriptions.

Is housing my responsibility if I receive an internship?

Interns are responsible for making their own housing arrangements. This includes locating their own housing options and paying for their housing. Centers may be able to offer minimal assistance by providing a list of local available housing and/or establishing a private social media group for interns to utilize for relocation planning purposes.

There are three sessions:
Start Date-End Date Total Duration
Fall: Late August/early September, mid-December, 16 weeks
Spring: Mid-January-early May, 16 weeks
Summer: Late May/early June, August 10 weeks
