On police salary, the Nigeria police force (NPF) is organized in a command (authority) structure that helps it maintain order and control. It is further divided into grades and steps. This serves as a distinction among officers in the same level. Among other things, all of these structure and grades finally serves as the basis of the salaries received by each officer in the force.

Officers in the Nigerian armed forces are categorized into commissioned and non-commissioned. The Nigeria police force(NPF) takes no exception in this. It is divided into two categories – commissioned and non-commissioned officers. The commissioned officers are the ones in senior ranks while the non-commissioned are the rank and file, the very junior officers. Some of the positions also further divided into two or more grade levels and steps. This grade levels and steps specify a position in a scale of ranks or qualities. It helps distinguish officers in the same rank.

List of Nigerian Police Force Commissioned Officers.

The commissioned officers are;

  1. The Inspector-General of Police
  2. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police
  3. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police
  4. The Commissioner of Police (In-charge of contingents in a state)
  5. The Deputy Commissioner of Police
  6. The Assistant Commissioner of Police
  7. The Chief Superintendent of Police
  8. The Superintendent of Police
  9. The Deputy Superintendent of Police
  10. The Assistant Superintendent of Police
  11. The Inspector of Police

List of Nigerian Police Force Non-Commissioned Officers.

The Non-commissioned officers are;

  1. Sergeant Major
  2. Sergeant
  3. Corporal
  4. Constable
  5. Recruit

The Nigerian police is a rather serious structure, which was built in 1930. Nowadays, it consists of 36 teams which is spread across the country and are classified into 12 various zones. It should be noted here that all these zones are operated by the seven various administrative organs.

There are over 2 000 police stations in Nigeria.

Nigerian police salary for Commissioned officers based on their respective ranks and grades are thus as follows;

  1. The Inspector General of Police Salary

He is the high-ranking police officer that would inspect, monitor and report any situation to the department. He is also the head of the police force in Nigeria. Being the highest rank; there is only one serving Inspector-General at a time in the nation.

  1. The Deputy Inspector-General of Police Salary

Deputy Inspector-General (DIG) of Police is next in rank to the IGP; there may be more than one Deputy Inspector-General at a time.

  1. The Assistant Inspector-General of Police

Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) of Police is next to the DIG and the third highest rank in the Nigeria police force (NPF).

  1. The Commissioner of Police Salary

Commissioner of Police (CP) is the fourth rank; a CP is the one in charge of contingents in a state. He is the number one police man in the state.

This rank is between the Assistant Commissioner and the Commissioner. The Deputy Commissioner takes over the command in the absent of the state commissioner. He supervises  the Assistance Commissioner of police in their day to day running.

NPF Non-commissioned Officers Salary Scale

All other officers in the NPF are referred to as non-commissioned officers, otherwise known as rank and file officers. Their salaries are as follow;

Sergeant Major (SM) is the twelfth rank and the first of the rank and file junior officers in the Nigeria police force (NPF). It is the highest rank of  non commissioned officer. A Sergeant Major assist administrative officer of a particular regiment.
